For many reasons, we cannot treat our romantic partner like our child. The important reason is because adult, romantic relationships are not selfless, they are conditional. I know this flies in the face of a lot of modern, new age ideas that say we should “love everyone selflessly” – but it’s simply not the case.

Romantic relationships are based on equality, mutual respect and accountability. If one person tries to selflessly love the other, obviously it’ will feel abusive to one and smothering to the other. Imagine that scenario taken to its extreme. Imagine you let your partner to live with you, you pay all the bills, you feed them, you drive them around, you basically take care of them like you take care of a child. How would that feel to you? It is not good. Yet if that person was our child, we wouldn’t mind. That is what we would want to do. We must hold adults accountable as adults.

To explain the point, also consider the opposite. Let’s say rather than having compassion and sympathy for the three year-old, we hold them to the same standards of emotional maturity that we hold an adult. The three-year-old throws a temper tantrum since they are jealous of their little sister and starts throwing things. So we say to them “that’s it, get out of the house and never come back here until you get that under control”. That would be inappropriate since the three-year old does not have the emotional maturity to understand complex emotions like anger and jealousy. The forgiveness and compassion of parents teach them.

But if we tolerate jealous, ranting rampages from another adult (with adult forms of power and cunning) – because we “Love them selflessly”, we are just asking for trouble, and the trouble may even be deadly. A very high percentage of people who are murdered are murdered by their lovers.

Especially women must be careful with this desire to selflessly love their partners. Because women have a natural tendency to want to love selflessly, there can be great confusion around this issue. Venus in Cancer is especially susceptible to blurring of the maternal relationship and the romantic relationship. this can happen if women have not had children. I will say that many, if not most, of my female clients still have this “selfless love” idea and try to hold their romantic relationships to this “new age” standard.

So let me say here and now, all the women who are reading this, it is okay NOT to love your partner selflessly. It is a conditional love. That is appropriate. When a deep trust is established after a long time, selfless love flows easily. But even if you think you got selfless love down – you watch and see – one person starts to violate the relationship agreement – and there will be arguing.

Astrologically, the relationship house is the seventh house. It is a secondary career house (and a very important career influence). It is transactional, like a contract where two people have to play fair.

If you want to love selflessly, get a dog or a cat. I’m serious by the way. Look at the way we treat our pets, that is selfless love. We serve the animal without regret or expectation. Every human being has the need to give love which is just as strong (or perhaps even stronger) than the need to receive love.

The Full moon gives a balancing point/contrast to the current Sun cycle. In this case, this cycle is Leo. Since August 16 we have been learning to express that solar, radiant self – or feel it as a lack of power in our life.

Two weeks ago I wrote on the new moon in Leo, “Just like the sun in the sky, the key to our true happiness in life is generosity. When we give of ourselves without expectation of appreciation, reward, praise – then we feel most alive. The Sun is a great example of this. It just gives and gives and gives, yet hardly no one ever remembers that we owe our entire existence, every second of it, to the Sun. The qualities of Leo as a powerful lion – the king of the jungle – and the fearlessness in your heart can be a great symbol this month. The lion never walks backwards he only advances forward. The lion doesn’t ask if the task is pleasant, he just knows it needs to be done – so he does it.”

Now, with the full moon in Aquarius, connecting our individual power to the larger society around us is most important. It is interesting to see how the health care debate has shifted in the last. Quite recently in the news, there has been much more of a push for those in favor of this legislation to “get the word out”. I have seen many people on Facebook changing their updates to a message related to the health care package. We realize we are together in it: Aquarius. We want to see that everyone is covered, no matter how big or small: Aquarius. Yet, we must put forth the effort, whether we like it or not: Leo.

On many levels, the cycle of Leo can be one of the most rewarding of the entire year. People who act from a place of power, creativity and generosity often see great fulfillment when the sun enters his own sign, as happened 16 days ago. But as was said, the highest promise of the Sun is generosity. Most fulfilling thing in life is adding beauty and giving meaning to the lives of others.

That is the Leo/Aquarius axis in a nutshell.

The full moon is a time where we may doubt our action, because of the desire to balance the heart and mind – actions and feelings – Sun and Moon. The square with Mercury just makes it more poignant.

But this is an exalted Mercury, so at least for a while we will have a good chance of seeing communication problems resolved with as little damage possible. I’ve experienced this myself in the midst of some communication problems, things get peacefully resolved.

Analyzing the upcoming transits, I would not be surprised if a healthcare compromise/agreement is reached sometime in October – when Saturn, the Sun and Mercury are in Virgo. This will probably happen when Mercury turns direct in mid-October. This is the most perfect time for an agreement to be reached. But in truth, I have not looked at this that closely.

As for the rest of us, we are pondering the need for cultural connection. The passion and expression of our individual creativity is great, but underneath it all we are cultural creatures and we want to share beauty with others and see our efforts make a difference in the world. This is one of a poignant message for our time. We realize it is no longer good enough to simply “get as much as we can for ourselves”.

We are interdependent.

We always have been.
